The Libyan Minister of Economy and Trade, Mohammed Al-Huweij, presented a draft agreement aimed at removing customs tariffs on food and pharmaceutical products to facilitate trade between Libya and Turkey. The agreement was submitted to Turkey’s Ministry of Economy as a step toward enhancing economic collaboration between the two nations.
Al-Huweij discussed the agreement during the 40th meeting of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC) on Monday in Istanbul. He expressed that other member states in COMCEC could also consider similar agreements to promote regional cooperation in key economic sectors.
In addition to trade, Al-Huweij addressed the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians, highlighting its broader impact on various member countries. He also pointed to new global geopolitical shifts that bring fresh economic challenges. Al-Huweij urged a more adaptable approach to future agendas that would enable rapid response to such urgent changes.
The COMCEC sessions covered reports from technical committees focused on enhancing intra-OIC trade, advancing trade cooperation, improving transportation and communications, promoting sustainable tourism, boosting agricultural productivity, alleviating poverty, and advancing digital transformation. The sessions also provided a platform to exchange views on digital payment systems among member states.
The meeting underlined the critical role of supporting the private sector and reviewed updates on the trade preference system. The 40th session of COMCEC is scheduled to continue until Wednesday.
